Home Wireless Network: Troubleshooting a home wireless network

Troubleshooting a home wireless network can be easily done by following a few simple steps. Most problems can be solved by simply rebooting the router and any machines connected to the network. Some configuration changes require that a reboot occurs for the change to become visible to the system.
If rebooting does not solve the issue, then determine if the issue is with a particular computer or the network. If other users are experiencing the same sort of issues then it is likely that the problem lies within the router. Try disconnecting the router power and then turn it back on after 30 seconds. Make sure that all the status lights indicate the correct functioning of the product. Once this is done, then disconnect the router and connect it to a computer via an Ethernet cable for configuration. Login to the router software interface and check that all the settings are correct. At this stage it is worth consulting the product documentation.

If the router is working and then there may be connectivity problems with computers connecting to the network. Make sure there are no obstacles interfering with the signal between the access point and computers. Next check that all the computers have been configured correctly. Try using a lower access speed such as 11mbit/sec to resolve connectivity issues. Make sure that the wireless connection has been configured correctly and the correct username and password credentials have been entered - some values are case-sensitive.

If you are still having problems then try and check out the manufacturer’s website for product updates. Some products are released with problems that only become apparent after release. This may you require you update the product firmware. Search through Internet forums and see if other users have come across similar problems. If you are unable to connect to the Internet then refer to any printed documentation, or check out your support options on the product and telephone the technical support line for the product.
