Home Wireless Network: Wireless network review

When it comes to a wireless network review, there are a few a things to look out for in the wireless product being reviewed. In the case of routers it is important to look out for connection speed, range, compatibility, router type and extra functionality the router may have.

• The connection speed determines the maximum speed at which the network can operate. This is usually less because of signal distortions and range. Typical speeds are 54 mbits per second which is sufficient for most tasks, however faster speeds of 108 mbits per second and beyond are now available.

• The range indicates the maximum the router signal can travel to an access device. This value will be less due to obstructions distorting the router. Wireless signals can easily penetrate walls but are absorbed by metal surfaces.

• Compatibility indicates which type of networks a router can connect to. Mixed mode compatibility with the wireless standards 802.11b and 802.11g ensures compatibility with older hardware, as well as new.

• Router type determines the core functionality of the router. If you share an Internet connection and do not have an existing Internet gateway such as a proxy server, then a wireless broadband modem router is the way to go. Some wireless routers also have a USB port for connecting a printer, which may prove useful.

• Extra functionality includes other things that the router can do. Perhaps the most important of these is security. A hardware firewall embedded into a router can help a great deal with security across the network, by limiting program and control access. Some routers also support UPnP (Universal Plug & Play) features, which is essential for games console connectivity and certain applications. Remote access will allow you to configure the router even when you are not at home.
